Onelio Jorge Cardoso was born in Calabazar de Sagua (Cuba) in 1914. He took baccalaureate studies in his home state but he couldn’t go on with his academic career because of the economic situation of that time. He performed several works (as a trainee in a photographic laboratory, as a rural teacher, as a medicine seller, or as a script writer for radio and television programs), while he was learning his true occupation: being a storyteller, as he liked calling himself.
Pablo Neruda wrote about Onelio Jorge Cardoso: “he is one of the best storytellers in America”.
He was awarded with diverse important literary prizes. His work has been translated to several languages. He died in 1986.
